ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals and pitching coach Dave Duncan have agreed to a one-year deal for the 2009 season with an option for 2010. Duncan has served as the Cardinals pitching coach for 13 seasons, beginning with the 1996 campaign.

"We are extremely pleased to have Dave returning." said Cardinals Vice President/General Manager, John Mozeliak. "He has a tremendous reputation in baseball and among players, and his ability to work with and make successful a diverse pitching staff is a talent we feel privileged to keep with the Cardinals."

Duncan, 62, just completed his 29th season as a pitching coach, the most all-time in the majors. He has been a pitching coach with Manager Tony La Russa since 1983 beginning with the Chicago White Sox, Oakland A's and Cardinals.

He has worked with four Cy Young Award winners including Bob Welch, Dennis Eckersley, LaMarr Hoyt and Chris Carpenter. In 2005 his pitching squad picked up the organization's first ERA title since 1969 while the 2004 team finished just percentage points behind Atlanta for the National League's ERA title.
