The St. Louis Cardinals announced a series of roster moves prior to their game this evening in San Diego, adding infielder Skip Schumaker and catcher Tony Cruz to the 25-man active roster.

The Cardinals placed catcher Gerald Laird (fracture of right index finger) on the 15-day disabled list and optioned right handed pitcher Mitchell Boggs to Memphis (AAA) to make room for both Schumaker and Cruz.

The Cardinals also announced today that right-handed pitcher Brian Broderick was returned to the team from the Washington Nationals and will be assigned to the Memphis (AAA) roster. Broderick, 24, was selected by the Nationals in the Rule V draft last December. He was 0-1 with a 6.57 ERA in 11 games for Washington, allowing 9 runs on 16 hits in 12.1 IP.

Schumaker, who has been on the 15-day D.L. since April 16 with a right triceps strain, appeared in three games with the Cardinals Extended Spring Training club last weekend and batted .417 (5-for-12) with three doubles. He was batting .241 with one home run and 8 RBI in 14 games for the Cardinals before going on the D.L.

Cruz, 24, was batting .232 (22-for-95) with 4 HR's and 16 RBI in 30 games at Memphis. The 5-11, 205-pound catcher will be making his Major League debut with his first game appearance. He was a 26th round selection by the Cardinals in the 2007 draft and earned All-Star honors at Palm Beach of the Florida State League (A) in both 2010 and 2008. Cruz was recently rated the "best defensive catcher" in the Cardinals minor league system by Baseball America and is currently ranked 3rd among Pacific Coast League catchers in throwing pct. (35 pct.).

The right-handed hitting Cruz has been assigned uniform #48.
