STL@HOU: Wainwright fans eight over 5 2/3 for the win

The White Sox have already started Interleague play, but Monday's series opener against the Cardinals marks the first time they will be without a designated hitter this season.

With right-handed pitcher Adam Wainwright on the mound for the Cardinals, White Sox manager Robin Ventura said the left-handed Adam Dunn will play in left field.

Dunn is batting .226 this season with 20 home runs, one of which came in Sunday's loss to the Astros.

This move sends the hot-hitting Dayan Viciedo to the bench. Since May 14, Viciedo has nine home runs and 24 RBIs, both of which are at or near the top of the American League during that span.

Ventura could have put Viciedo at third base, where he originally started his White Sox career, but decided he didn't want to keep moving him around.

"He hasn't done it in a while," Ventura said of Viciedo playing third base. "Not fair to him, either. He's done a good job of learning left field. [Interleague Play] is not something we have to do the whole season."

The Cardinals, on the other hand, will be starting their second of three consecutive Interleague series at home and won't be forced into any lineup shifting, though manager Mike Matheny has been doing some volunteer reordering with the veteran Carlos Beltran.

Beltran played in the two-hole for the 19th time on Sunday against the Indians, where he is batting .293 on the season with 10 home runs and 17 RBIs. He has started 31 games in the No. 4 spot this season and is batting .294 with seven homers and 27 RBIs.

"You can't ignore how effective he's been in that two-hole," Matheny said. "Maybe it's just coincidence. Whatever it is, it just works for him. He's been productive [at] four also. I'm certain if we throw him in three, he's going to do well. It just seems, with this lineup, it's a nice fit for him in that two spot."

White Sox: Quintana filling in for Danks again
• Though the White Sox want Jose Quintana to go back to the Minors once John Danks returns from the disabled list, Tuesday's starter surely isn't making the decision easy on the White Sox.

In three games as a starter this season, Quintana has given up just five runs in 15 2/3 innings (2.87 ERA), including a six-inning, two-run performance against the Blue Jays his last time out.

"He's going out there and he's making his way in the Major Leagues," pitching coach Don Cooper said. "I mean, this is stuff that's great to watch, see a kid go out there for the first time, get his first win, pitching well, trying to live his dream. That's good, that's not bad."

The left-handed Danks went on the 15-day DL retroactive to May 20 after he experienced soreness in his left shoulder following a start against the Cubs on May 19.

Cardinals: Wainwright looking for first quality start in June
• Coming off of his second-worst outing of the season when he surrendered seven runs in 6 1/3 innings to the Mets, Wainwright barely got back into the win column in his last start.

Though he failed to get out of the sixth inning, Wainwright earned the win in Houston, tossing 5 2/3 innings, while giving up three runs on seven hits. In 12 starts this season, the righty has a 4.97 ERA with 65 strikeouts.

• Cardinals infielder Matt Carpenter, who has been on the disabled list since May 23 with a right oblique strain, will be going on a rehab assignment soon, Matheny said Sunday. Monday's series opener will be the 19th Carpenter has missed this season.

Worth Noting
• The Cardinals' Rafael Furcal and David Freese go into Monday's game a combined 2-for-22 so far on the homestand. Furcal is 0-for-11 and Freese is 2-for-11.
