NYM@SD: Despaigne takes no-hitter into 8th inning

Six days after coming four outs away from the first no-hitter in Padres history, Odrisamer Despaigne returns to the mound on Saturday night to face the Braves.

San Diego's rookie right-hander took a no-hitter into the eighth inning against the Mets on Sunday before settling for a no-decision in a Padres victory. That outing brought Despaigne's ERA for the month down to 1.74 -- his season ERA sits at 1.31 -- and his opponents' batting average down to .162.

"Hopefully, I can get one next time," Despaigne (2-1) said through a translator.

Opposite Despaigne, Atlanta hands the ball to Julio Teheran, another of the game's best young pitchers. Teheran (9-6) was named an All-Star and struck out 11 batters in seven innings during the Braves' 3-1 loss to the Marlins on Monday.

Teheran has posted a 2.64 ERA and struck out 127 batters this season.

"Teheran was about as good as I've seen him in a long time, and I guess we can say that every time he goes out," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said after Teheran's last start. "I feel like he does that."

Braves: Varvaro returns from paternity list
A day after relief pitcher Anthony Varvaro's wife, Kerry, gave birth to the couple's second son, Atlanta activated Varvaro from the paternity list for Friday's series opener against San Diego.

"Everything went smoothly," Varvaro said. "He's healthy, Mommy's healthy and here we are, back to work."

To make room for Varvaro, the Braves optioned rookie pitcher Gus Schlosser back to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Padres: Rehab stints nearing end
San Diego could get two players back from Minor League rehab assignments before the end of their four-game series this weekend against the Braves.

Padres manager Bud Black said Friday that there's a chance second baseman Jedd Gyorko and first baseman Yonder Alonso -- both playing with Triple-A El Paso -- could rejoin the team before Monday's series finale at Turner Field in Atlanta.

Gyorko has been on the disabled list with plantar fasciitis in his left foot since June 4. Alonso has been sidelined since June 17 with right wrist tendinitis.

Worth noting
• San Diego has won seven of its last eight games against the Braves.

• Padres outfielder Jeff Francoeur went 0-for-3 with a walk against his former team in San Diego's 5-2 win in Atlanta on Friday. Comments
