Cards take shortstop with top pick
St. Louis has to wait until third round to draft

ST. LOUIS -- The Cardinals addressed a general need rather than a specific one with their first pick in the 2002 Draft, taking high school shortstop Calvin Hayes from Salisbury, N.C.
Hayes attended East Rowan High School. A right-handed hitter, he is listed at 5 feet, 9 inches tall and turned 18 in March.
"He's a guy that we've been zooming in all along, hoping that he'd get to us in the third round," said Cardinals director of amateur scouting Marty Maier. "We're thrilled about this guy. He's a guy who's not a real tall guy and that's the knock on this guy, he's not a real big guy. But he's an above-average runner. He's got outstanding hands. He's got a chance to hit and hit with some power down the road.
"The tools on this guy are right off the board. He's a good fielder, he's a good runner and he's got a chance to hit. There's three major league tools right there. When you can get a guy like that in the third round, you gotta be excited about it."
The Cardinals are set at shortstop for the foreseeable future with Edgar Renteria, who is signed through 2003 with club options for 2004 and 2005. However, the selection of Hayes is a small step toward replenishing a farm system that is somewhat depleted in position players. Most of the Cardinals' best prospects are pitchers, though the organization has some intriguing young hitters in Class A.
The Cardinals lost their first- and second-round picks in this year's draft as compensation for signing free-agent pitcher Jason Isringhausen and first baseman Tino Martinez.
The club instead has chosen to tout three recent signings from last year's draft, so-called "draft-and-follows." Right-handed pitchers Blake Hawksworth and Shane Reedy and outfielder Terry Evans were all late-round picks in 2001. All three played junior college baseball this past season, which left them eligible to sign with St. Louis up until the beginning of this year's draft.
The Cardinals consider Hawksworth to be a first-round-caliber talent and Reedy to be approximately a second-rounder.
