Cards go after pitching on Day 2
By Matthew Leach / MLB.com

After loading up on position players in the early rounds on Tuesday, the Cardinals went for pitchers on Wednesday. Their first five selections of Day 2 were right-handed pitchers, and 15 of 28 total picks were used on hurlers.

"We tried to load up on some pitching today," said director of amateur scouting Marty Maier. "Make sure we had enough guys to go to (rookie league) Johnson City and New Jersey. Fill those clubs up and make sure we had enough. We took a lot of regular players yesterday. We tried to get back into some pitching. The depth of this draft wasn't huge, but it did have some pitching."

Perhaps more telling was that 18 of St. Louis' last 28 selections came from the four-year college ranks. That was a strategic decision, based largely on signability.

"We were looking to get some college pitching down here and we needed the guys that we could sign "We did take some flyers on some younger guys later on, some high school guys that we'll see if we can sign.

"Definitely we felt like we wanted to make sure we got guys we could sign. But we're still getting some quality guys down below."

Fittingly, since the Cardinals picked last in every round, they also had this year's "Mr. Irrelevant," the final pick in the draft. Selection No. 1,482 overall was high school right-hander John Powell. The Cardinals see Powell as a potential "draft-and-follow" player.

"Powell is a high school player out of Arkansas who, our scouts saw him pitch, and he's going to junior college. He's a guy that we think might be a pretty good pitcher down the road. We'll watch him this summer, see how he goes."

Maier said that the Cardinals have yet to sign any of their draft picks, but that some players could begin to sign in the coming days.
