Cardinals at the plate: Yadier Molina stroked a double, and Skip Schumaker smacked a solo home run for St. Louis.

Mets at the plate: Chris Woodward hit a two-out single to score Chase Lambin in the eighth inning to give the Mets the go-ahead run. Jose Valentin hit a triple to right field and scored the other run in the sixth.

Cardinals on the mound: Jason Marquis allowed one unearned run on three hits while striking out four in 5 2/3 innings of work. Braden Looper (1-3) allowed one run on two hits in one inning.

Mets on the mound: Steve Trachsel allowed four hits, no runs and walked none in five innings. Duaner Sanchez (1-0) allowed one run on one hit, but struck out three in one inning to get the win. Billy Wagner pitched one scoreless two-hit inning, and Tim Lavigne and Jorge Julio each allowed no hits in one inning of work.

Up next: St. Louis opens its season at 2:05 p.m. CT on Monday at Philadelphia. National League Cy Young winner Chris Carpenter will start against the Phillies' Jon Lieber.

Tom Glavine will start for the Mets in Monday's season opener against Livan Hernandez of the Nationals, beginning at 1:10 ET. Jesse Orosco will throw out the ceremonial first pitch to Gary Carter to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Mets' 1986 world championship.
