Edgar V. Gonzalez, a 28-year-old infielder who signed with the Cardinals as a Minor League free agent after spending the 2006 campaign in the Florida Marlins organization, has excelled in the Mexican Pacific League.

The member of the Venados de Mazatlan hit .283 with five home runs and 25 RBIs over 219 at-bats during the circuit's regular season. However, his postseason performance has been truly spectacular. Playing alongside his brother, Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, the San Diego native hit .444 (8-for-18) as Mazatlan defeated the Mayos de Navojoa, four games to one, in a best-of-seven semifinal playoff series.

Gonzalez is one of four St. Louis farmhands currently participating in the postseason in either the Mexican Pacific or Venezuelan Winter League. Here's an update on the other three:

Mexican Pacific League
Troy Cate, LHP -- Cate, one of Gonzalez's Mazatlan teammates, was outstanding in his lone playoff start. The 26-year-old southpaw scattered four hits over seven scoreless innings, but he didn't factor in the decision.

Venezuelan Winter League
Rayner Laya, 2B -- Laya, a member of the Aguilas del Zulia, has appeared in just one of his club's eight postseason contests. The 26-year-old scored a run without collecting an at-bat.

Jose Martinez, INF -- The 20-year-old Martinez has appeared in two postseason games for the Tigres de Aragua. He went hitless in his lone at-bat.
