Dodgers at the plate: James Loney had three singles and a walk. Andy La Roche had a bases-loaded sacrifice fly for the only Dodgers run.
Cardinals at the plate: The Cardinals slugged five home runs -- two by Skip Schumaker and one each from Chris Duncan, John Rodriguez and Edgar Gonzalez. Former Dodger Jolbert Cabrera had a two-run single in a four-run first inning.
Dodgers on the mound: Starter Brad Penny struggled through a 27-pitch first inning, allowing four runs on four singles and a walk, then a 32-pitch second inning, allowing a two-run homer to Duncan. Closer Takashi Saito made his first spring appearance and pitched a scoreless inning. Hong-Chih Kuo allowed a solo home run in two innings. Jonathan Broxton pitched a perfect inning. Travis Smith allowed a pair of home runs.
Cardinals on the mound: Braden Looper went 3 1/3 scoreless innings, followed by Ryan Franklin, who pitched two innings and allowed one run. Chris Narveson pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings and Andy Cavazos pitched a scoreless inning.
Grapefruit League records: Dodgers 4-4, Cardinals 4-3-1
Up next: Derek Lowe and Brett Tomko are among the pitchers listed to throw Thursday night against Florida, which will start Anibal Sanchez. Tomko is fighting for the fifth starter's job. Joe Beimel will pitch after experiencing elbow discomfort in his last appearance.
