Izturis likely to return Sunday from DL
Right-hander Reyes optioned to Triple-A Memphis
ST. LOUIS -- After sitting out the past two weeks with a right hamstring injury, Cesar Izturis is expected to come off the disabled list on Sunday.
Eligible to come off the DL in time for the finale against the Cubs, Izturis said his hamstring is better and feeling stronger.
"It's something that I've had in the past but I think the past two weeks have been able to help me get it stronger," Izturis said. "I don't feel [anything] right now, so it's good."
With infielder Aaron Miles' play lately, and solid contributions from second baseman Adam Kennedy, there isn't a great urgency to bring Izturis back right away. But, when healthy, Izturis is one of the better defensive shortstops in the game.
Though Izturis said he feels good enough to play in the starting lineup on Sunday, if he comes off the DL, manager Tony La Russa stopped short of saying that will happen.
"One step at a time brother," La Russa said. "It's a tough question to answer."
Izturis took batting practice prior to the start of Saturday's game and has run pain-free lately.
Izturis injured himself on June 21 against the Boston Red Sox. While fielding a popup, Izturis tweaked his hamstring and has been on the DL since.
The Cardinals also made an additional roster move Saturday, optioning right-handed pitcher Anthony Reyes to Triple-A Memphis after he was eligible to come off the DL. Reyes was placed on the DL, retroactive to June 16, due to a right elbow strain.
