ST. LOUIS -- D-backs third baseman Mark Reynolds tied the record for most strikeouts in a season when he fanned for the 199th time this year in the second inning against the Cardinals on Wednesday night at Busch Stadium.

The 199 strikeouts ties the mark set by the Phillies' Ryan Howard last year.

"I ain't got it yet," Reynolds said. "Talk to me when I get it."

At the end of Wednesday's play, Howard had struck out 196 times, so there is still a chance the record will change hands again.

Reynolds was out of the lineup Tuesday after reaching 198 strikeouts with a pair of punchouts Monday night.

"He asked me, 'Does this have anything to do with the strikeout thing?'" D-backs manager Bob Melvin said of a conversation he had with Reynolds on Monday. "I go, 'Well, unless I'm going to sit you the rest of the season, no.' I just wanted to get a day off for him and wanted to get another left-handed bat in there. I was a little surprised that he asked me about that. If I was concerned with that, it would have been a while ago that I would have been concerned with that."

In addition to the high strikeout total, Reynolds also leads the Majors in errors with 34. Only seven other players have led their respective leagues in both categories, the last being Zoilo Versalles in 1965 for the Twins. Versalles committed 39 errors and struck out 122 times.

Reynolds, though, has been productive. The infielder, in his first full season after being called up in May 2007, has hit 28 homers and driven in 94. He trails only Adam Dunn on the D-backs in those categories, but most of Dunn's came during his time with the Reds.

"He's got some other [numbers] that have been very good," Melvin said. "His production has been great this year, especially for a guy that hasn't had a full year at the big league level."
