Harris, 23, attended the United States Naval Academy. As a senior at Annapolis, he went 2-2 with a 3.50 ERA, 37 strikeouts and 10 walks in 36 innings. Over his career, he averaged 11.78 strikeouts per nine innings and posted a 2.51 ERA in 222 1/3 innings.
Harris' case, of course, is significantly complicated by his commitment to military service. As a condition of attending the Naval Academy, Harris committed to five years of service in the Navy. He is currently a weapons officer aboard the Ponce.
By signing Harris, though, the Cardinals ensure that once he is done with his military service, the club owns his baseball rights. His Draft round is the same as the reigning National League MVP. Albert Pujols was a 13th-round pick in 1999.
