JUPITER, Fla. -- The Cardinals' roster continued to come into sharper focus Sunday when the team cut five players.

Pitcher Blake Hawksworth and infielder Tyler Greene were optioned to Triple-A Memphis, while pitcher Fernando Salas, catcher Brian Anderson and outfielder Jon Jay were reassigned to Minor League camp. Salas, Anderson and Jay were in camp on non-roster invitations.

Most of the moves were expected to come at some point, with the possible exception of Greene, who had appeared to force his way into the competition for a utility infielder spot. The moves leave the Cardinals with 33 players in camp -- including third baseman David Freese, who was recalled from Minor League camp on Sunday -- and reliever Dennys Reyes, who was scheduled to arrive to Jupiter on Sunday after pitching in the World Baseball Classic.

"These guys, every one of them, [need to play every day]," said manager Tony La Russa. "Anderson's got to play. Greene's got to play. Jay's got to play. They've got to get out there and play every day in Triple-A."
