ST. PETERSBURG -- The Rays-Jays afternoon contest at Tropicana Field was delayed for 20 minutes when the lights dimmed slightly due to severe thunderstorms outside.

The clock read 2:29 p.m. when umpire crew chief Tim Welke told the Blue Jays to return to the dugout after they had just taken the field in the bottom of the seventh inning with the Rays leading, 3-2.

After a 20-minute delay, the Blue Jays took the field to start the bottom of the seventh. And despite the delay, Blue Jays starter Roy Halladay remained in the game

According to Florida Progress, the power outage was caused by a lightning strike to a substation in the area.

According to the Rays PR staff, the blackout was widespread throughout St. Petersburg and not just localized to Tropicana Field.
