Thompson's suspension reduced

Cardinals pitcher disciplined for brushback pitch vs. Mets

09/03/09 11:44 AM ET

ST. LOUIS - Cardinals pitcher Brad Thompson had his three-game suspension reduced to two games for throwing near the head of the Mets third baseman David Wright on Aug 5 and will begin serving the suspension with Thursday afternoon's game against Milwaukee.

Thompson, who also has to pay an undisclosed fine, didn't hit Wright with the pitch and got him to ground into a double play later in the at-bat. Both dugouts were warned after the pitch, but Thompson wasn't ejected.

"It's definitely got to be the biggest suspension ever for getting a guy to hit into a double play, that's for sure," Thompson said. "I'm surprised. I thought we had a great case on our appeal and I don't think that it's a fair suspension, but it is what it is and I'll serve it and come back in a couple days."

Thompson is 2-6 with a 5.02 ERA in 26 games for the Cardinals. He will be eligible to play on Saturday in Pittsburgh.
