Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols will undergo arthroscopic debridement surgery on his right elbow on Wednesday, the team confirmed on Tuesday. The surgery, to remove bone chips in Pujols' elbow, will be performed by team physician George Paletta and Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala.
Pujols, coming off a season during which he hit .327 with 47 home runs and 135 RBIs, is expected to be fully recovered by the start of Spring Training in February.
The 47 home runs were the most Pujols has hit since 2006, when he hit 49.
This will be the second surgery in as many offseasons for Pujols. He had nerve transposition on the same elbow last October. There's a chance he still could need Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery at some point in his career.
