Wainwright nabs Players Choice honor

Peers tab St. Louis right-hander as Outstanding NL Pitcher

10/28/09 5:24 PM ET

ST. LOUIS -- What could be a very busy awards season for the Cardinals is off to a fast start.

Adam Wainwright received the Players Choice Award as the National League Outstanding Pitcher in 2009, beating out Tim Lincecum and teammate Chris Carpenter. This comes on the heels of Carpenter being named the Players Choice NL Comeback Player of the Year. The Royals' Zack Greinke was tabbed as the Outstanding Pitcher in the American League.

Wainwright, 29, is a leading contender for the NL Cy Young Award after he led the NL in wins (19) and innings pitched (233) while ranking fourth in the NL with 212 strikeouts and a 2.63 ERA.

Wainwright, Lincecum and Carpenter are considered the favorites for the Cy Young, which will be announced in November.

Players Choice Awards are voted on by Major League players and handed out by the MLB Players Association. Albert Pujols is up for three of them: NL Outstanding Player, Major League Player of the Year and Major League Man of the Year.
