ST. LOUIS -- The Cardinals confirmed their Spring Training schedule on Thursday, marking the beginning of the official countdown to the 2010 season.
And despite the departure of the Baltimore Orioles to the western coast of Florida, the new schedule doesn't look too grueling for the Redbirds. St. Louis begins Grapefruit League play on March 4 with a game against the Mets at Port St. Lucie, and wraps up with a home game against the Marlins on April 1.
In total, the Cardinals play 28 games in 29 days, 14 at home and 14 on the road. They have two off-days and one split-squad day. Though some early versions of the schedule suggested that an additional game would be added, that is not the case.
There's a little less variety in this year's spring schedule than in some past seasons. Nineteen of the Cardinals' 28 games come against the Mets (seven meetings), Marlins (six) or Nationals (six). They have three "road" games at their home facility, where they play Florida but are designated as the visiting team.
St. Louis also has two games each against the Twins, Red Sox, Astros and Braves, one home and one away against each. The Orioles come to Roger Dean for a single game with no return engagement from the Cardinals.
All game times are considered tentative at this point, and the club has yet to announce ticket information. Following the Grapefruit League schedule, the Cardinals will play two exhibition games at the Twins' new stadium, Target Field, before opening the regular season in Cincinnati on April 5, 2010.
