Cardinals announce Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Month for June
Taveras named Player of the Month; Sherriff named Pitcher of the Month
ST. LOUIS, Mo., July 2, 2012 – The St. Louis Cardinals today announced outfielder Oscar Taveras and starter Ryan Sherriff as the Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Month for June.
Taveras, 20, hit .347 in the month of June, recording 19 RBI, six homers, a triple, and nine doubles. He also finished the month with a .398 on-base percentage and a .643 slugging percentage. Taveras earned Player of the Week honors in the Texas League (AA) for Springfield during the week of June 4-10. Additionally, Taveras went 3-for-4 with a 2B, HR and 3 RBIs in last week’s Texas League All-Star game, earning game MVP honors. Taveras is leading the Texas League with his .324 batting average and he leads Springfield with 60 RBI and 17 home runs. The left-handed hitting Taveras was one of two Cardinals minor leaguers (also Kolten Wong) named to the MLB All-Star Futures Game to be played on Sunday, July 8 in Kansas City. Taveras has been named the Cardinals Minor League Player of the Month for the second time this season, also earning the honor in April.
Sherriff, 22, finished the month of June winning three out of four starts with a 3-0 record and a 1.98 ERA. He struck out 14 batters and allowed only six runs in 27.1 innings on the mound. Opposing batters hit just .180 against him in June. The left-hander is a perfect 5-0 on the season for Palm Beach (A) with a 2.23 ERA, earning a win in all but one of his starts for the Cardinals. Sherriff, the Cardinals 28th round selection in the June 2011 draft, has struck out 20 batters allowing only 12 runs (10 earned) on 26 hits while holding opponents to a .176 batting average in 40.1 innings of work this season.
