Marlins sign first-round Draft pick Andrew Heaney, announce four other signings
Agree to terms with 30 selections from 2012 First-Year Player Draft
JUPITER -- The Miami Marlins today announced that they have signed LHP Andrew Heaney, the club’s first-round selection (ninth overall) in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft. The announcement was made by Vice President of Scouting Stan Meek.
Heaney, a junior at Oklahoma State University, was the Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Year this season, and a Division 1 First-Team, All-American. He finished the season with an 8-2 record and a 1.60 ERA in 15 starts. He also led the NCAA with 140 strikeouts in 118.1 innings. Heaney is an Oklahoma City native and graduated from Putnam City High School. Heaney will be assigned to the Jamestown Jammers of the short-season New York-Penn League.
The Club, which announced 26 signings (one undrafted free agent) on June 18, also announced four other signings from the Draft today, including third-round pick (104th overall) SS Avery Romero out of Pedro Menendez High School in St. Augustine. Romero, who was the Club’s second overall selection in the Draft, will be assigned to the Gulf Coast League Marlins.
The other signings announced today were OFs Cody Keefer (15th round) and Edward Sappelt (37th), as well as LHP Chipper Smith (38th).
Overall, the Marlins signed 30 of their 40 selections in this year’s Draft.
