JUPITER, Fla. -- The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have claimed lefthanded pitcher Luis Martinez off waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers and assigned him to their 40-man major league roster.

Martinez, 24, was the Brewers' Minor League Pitcher of the Year last season, making a total of 31 starts with Huntsville (AA), Indianapolis (AAA) and Milwaukee.

The 6-6, 228-pound Dominican native fanned 172 batters in his 177.0 innings pitched last season and has struck out 586 in 599.1 innings pitched in the minors over his career.

Martinez made his major league debut last September, appearing in four games for Milwaukee, including a Sept. 13 start vs. the Cardinals at Busch Stadium.
