Garciaparra and Pujols share Bank of America Presents the National League Player of the Week

First basemen Nomar Garciaparra of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals have been named co-winners of the Bank of America Presents the National League Player of the Week for May 8-14, 2006. Bank of America, the Official Bank of Major League Baseball, is the presenting sponsor of the National League and American League Player of the Week Awards, which reflect Bank of America's long-standing tradition of promoting and recognizing higher standards of accomplishment.

Garciaparra led the N.L. with 25 total bases, a 1.000 slugging percentage, and was tied for the league lead with four doubles. The fivetime All-Star batted .480 (12-25) with five runs, three home runs, eight RBI and a .519 on-base percentage over his six games. Garciaparra tallied five multi-hit games over the week to help lead the Dodgers to a 4-2 record. The converted first baseman has yet to make an error this season.

Pujols finished tied for the league lead with 10 RBI, raising his Major League leading total to 48 on the season. The slugger batted .429 (9-for-21) with eight runs, three home runs, two doubles and 20 total bases. Pujols compiled a .952 slugging percentage, a .500 on-base percentage and added three multi-hit games to help send the first-place Cardinals to a 4-2 record for the week. The four-time All-Star currently leads the Majors in runs scored (39), homers (19), total bases (105), extra-base hits (25) and slugging percentage (.833).

Other nominees this past week included Pujols' St. Louis teammates David Eckstein (.440, 1 2B, 4 R) and Jim Edmonds (.450, 1 HR, 6 RBI); Garciaparra's fellow Dodgers infielder Jeff Kent (.304, 5 HR, 10 RBI); San Diego's Clay Hensley (1-0, 2.57 ERA, 1 CG) and Dave Roberts (.476, 9 R, 7 SB); Miguel Cabrera (.346, 2 HR, 9 RBI) and Hanley Ramirez (.519, 6 R, 3 SB) of the Marlins; Pedro Feliz (.370, 2 HR, 5 RBI), Lance Niekro (.400, 1 HR, 8 RBI) and Jason Schmidt (1-0, 1.69 ERA, 9 SO, 1 CG) of the Giants; Atlanta's Jeff Francoeur (.346, 1 HR, 9 RBI) and John Smoltz (1-0, 2.00 ERA, 7 SO, 1 CG); Damian Miller (.421, 2 HR, 7 RBI) of the Brewers; Houston's Andy Pettitte (1-0, 3.86 ERA, 11 SO, 1 CG); Felipe Lopez (.440, 6 R) of the Reds; Colorado's Matt Holliday (.391, 3 HR, 5 RBI); Luis Gonzalez (.444, 1 2B, 5 R) of the Diamondbacks; Washington's Tony Armas (2-0, 0.69 ERA, 10 SO); Jose Castillo (.450, 2 2B, 2 RBI) of the Pirates; and Philadelphia's Ryan Howard (.286, 4 HR, 6 RBI).
