ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals today announced that they have hired Jaron Madison as assistant scouting director and Brent Strom as minor league pitching instructor. In addition, it was announced that Michael Girsch was promoted to director of baseball development and Osbert O'Campo to manager of amateur scouting.
Madison spent the last two seasons working for the San Diego Padres as an assistant to the director of scouting.
Prior to his Padres stint, Madison worked as an area scout with the Pittsburgh Pirates from 2002-2005. A graduate of Long Beach State University, he was an outfielder for their baseball team and captained the club that went to the College World Series in 1998.
A former Major League pitching coach for the Houston Astros and Kansas City Royals, Strom was most recently
with the Nationals/Expos for five seasons from 2002-2006 as minor league pitching coordinator. A former big-league pitcher, he was the New York Mets first-round selection in the 1970 First-Year Player Draft. He owns a career mark of 22-39 with a 3.95 ERA in 100 career Major League games (75 starts) for the Mets (1972), Indians (1973) and Padres (1975-77). He graduated from USC with a degree in physical education and helped the Trojans to NCAA baseball championships in both 1968 and 1970.
Girsch will enter his third season in the Cardinals front office. He was originally the amateur scouting
coordinator and will be responsible for overseeing statistical analysis as part of the duties in his new position. Girsch is a graduate of Notre Dame.
O'Campo ran the Cardinals Dominican Academy the last two seasons. He will work closely with team amateur
scouts and handle logistical issues, travel and reports. O'Campo will also scout in Missouri, Iowa and Southern Illinois.
The Georgetown University graduate will relocate to St. Louis.
