Todd Wellemeyer of the St. Louis Cardinals voted National League Pitcher of the Month for May

St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Todd Wellemeyer, who was 4-0 with a 2.19 ERA in May, has been voted National League Pitcher of the Month.

Wellemeyer won a career-best four straight decisions, tossing 37.0 innings in which he allowed 11 runs (nine earned), 28 hits (two home runs) and recorded 12 strikeouts and 12 walks. On May 9th at Milwaukee, the 29-year-old worked 6.0 innings and did not allow an earned run in his no-decision. In two starts vs. Pittsburgh (May 14th and May 30th), Todd worked seven innings and limited the Pirates to one run en route to winning both games. St. Louis acquired Wellemeyer via a waiver claim last May. Last season, the Kentucky native went 3-2 with a 3.11 ERA in 20 games (11 starts) for the Cardinals.

Other pitchers receiving votes were Jose Valverde (1-0, 1.20 ERA, 10 SV) of the Houston Astros, Edinson Volquez (3-2, 1.63 ERA, 50 SO) of the Cincinnati Reds, Tim Hudson (4-1, 2.25 ERA, 31 SO) of the Atlanta Braves, Chad Billingsley (3-2, 1.89 ERA, 31 SO) of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs hurlers Carlos Zambrano (3-0, 2.45 ERA, 23 SO) and Ryan Dempster (3-2, 2.35 ERA, 41 SO).

Todd Wellemeyer will receive a specially-designed trophy and a Sharp AQUOS® HD LCD-TV to commemorate his N.L. Pitcher of the Month performance.
