Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals named Bank of America Presents the National League Player of the Week

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols has been named Bank of America Presents the National League Player of the Week for September 22-28, 2008. Bank of America, the Official Bank of Major League Baseball, is the presenting sponsor of the National League and American League Player of the Week Awards, which reflect Bank of America's long-standing tradition of promoting and recognizing higher standards of accomplishment.

Pujols led the N.L. with a .588 (10-17) batting average and a 1.235 slugging percentage, and tied for the league-lead with 10 RBI, a .680 on-base percentage and seven walks. The 28-year-old recorded two doubles and scored six runs. The six-time N.L. All-Star homered in three consecutive games on September 25th vs. Arizona and September 26th-27th vs. Cincinnati. On September 25th-26th, Albert posted back-to-back three-hit games and added three multi-RBI games during the week. Pujols finished the season hitting .357, which ranked second in the N.L., with 37 home runs and 116 RBI. This marks his eighth career weekly award and his second of the 2008 season (previously won: 8/24/08).

Other nominees this past week included Pujols' teammates Troy Glaus (.364, 2 HR, 6 RBI), Cesar Izturis (.500, 11 H, 5 RBI), Felipe Lopez (.548, 1 HR, 7 RBI) and Ryan Ludwick (.429, 3 HR, 10 RBI); Milwaukee's CC Sabathia (2-0, 0.56 ERA, 18 SO); Philadelphia's Pat Burrell (.385, 1 HR, 5 RBI), Ryan Howard (.368, 2 HR, 5 RBI) and Chase Utley (.421, 1 HR, 5 RBI); Johan Santana (2-0, 1.06 ERA, 19 SO) and David Wright (.417, 1 HR, 6 RBI) of the Mets; Cincinnati's Jerry Hairston (.321, 2 HR, 8 RBI) and Joey Votto (.500, 3 HR, 7 RBI); Arizona's Stephen Drew (.393, 2 HR, 5 RBI) and Chad Qualls (3 SV, 0.00 ERA, 4 SO); Colorado's Jorge De La Rosa (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 7 SO) and Troy Tulowitzki (.417, 1 HR, 5 RBI); Andre Ethier (.438, 2 2B, 3 RBI) of the Dodgers; Houston's Kazuo Matsui (.429, 1 HR, 4 RBI); Florida's Josh Willingham (.909 SLG., 4 HR, 6 RBI); Pittsburgh's Steven Pearce (.320, 3 HR, 4 RBI); Washington's Anderson Hernandez (.467, 2 2B, 4 RBI); Ryan Theriot (.579, .680 OBP, 11 H) of the Cubs; and Atlanta's Josh Anderson (.400, 2 HR, 3 RBI).

Tourneau, the world's largest watch store, will award Albert Pujols with a luxury Swiss Timepiece, suitably engraved, in recognition of his accomplishments as Bank of America Presents the National League Player of the Week.
