Seven-time All-Star and 2008 National League Most Valuable Player Albert Pujols will be a prominent part of the 2009 Major League Baseball All-Star festivities including the State Farm Home Run Derby and the State Farm "Call Your Shot. Aim for the Arch" promotion. In addition, Pujols will join Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith as the official spokespeople for the 2009 Major League Baseball All-Star FanFest, July 10-14 at America's Center in downtown St. Louis.
A favorite event among players and fans, the 2009 State Farm Home Run Derby, which will feature many of the top hitters in Major League Baseball swinging for the fences in Busch Stadium, will take place on Monday, July 13 live on ESPN, ESPN HD, ESPN Deportes and ESPN Radio beginning at 7 PM CT.
For the second year, State Farm and Major League Baseball will give one fan the ultimate baseball experience of standing in the batter's box, pointing to the outfield and calling a home run shot. Prior to the State Farm Home Run Derby on July 13, Albert Pujols will try to hit a ball into the stands where the fan pointed. If the fan and Pujols connect on the called shot, the fan wins a 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid and a MLB Fan Room that includes:
- A 65" Sharp AQUOS LCD TV and Sharp Sound Bar
- Favorite Team Dreamseats
- Pepsi Products to Stock the Room
The State Farm "Call Your Shot. Aim for the Arch" promotion begins on May 11, 2009. For more details about the "Call Your Shot. Aim for the Arch" promotion and to enter, visit the "Call Your Shot" website at www.sfcallyourshot.com.
As spokespeople for Major League Baseball All-Star FanFest, Pujols and Smith will help generate awareness and excitement for the interactive baseball theme park and the largest baseball fan event in the world. Major League Baseball All-Star FanFest will make its first visit to St. Louis and will officially launch the 2009 Major League Baseball All-Star Week.
Now in its 19th season, Major League Baseball All-Star FanFest provides an unrivaled experience for families and fans of all ages, including interactive activities and historical exhibits such as life-size video batting and pitching cages, seminars from Major League legends, free autograph sessions with Cardinals legends and Hall of Famers, memorabilia and much more.
Ticket sales for Major League Baseball All-Star FanFest are currently in high demand with over 80,000 already sold, 7,000 ahead of last year's recording breaking attendance event in New York City as of this date.
Albert is a two-time National League MVP (2005 and 2008) and helped lead the Cardinals to a World Series Championship in 2006. In 2008, Pujols earned his Club's "triple crown" for the fourth straight year and the seventh time in eight years by leading the Cardinals with a .357 batting average, 37 home runs (tied with Ryan Ludwick) and 116 RBI. He has now posted 30-or-more home runs in each of his first eight Major League seasons, which is twice as long as any other streak in history at the start of a career. The 2001 National League Rookie of the Year also has collected more than 100 RBI in each of his eight seasons, joining Hall of Famers Al Simmons (11 times) and Ted Williams (8 times) as the only players in history to accomplish that feat. Pujols, a seven-time National League All-Star, capped a remarkable 2008 campaign by winning the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevy. Bestowed annually, the Award recognizes the Major League Baseball player who combines outstanding play on the field with devoted work in the community.
Known as "The Wizard of Oz", Smith was one of the game's greatest defensive shortstops. Over his 19 year career with the San Diego Padres and St. Louis Cardinals, he won the Rawlings National League Gold
Glove Award for defensive play at shortstop in 13 consecutive seasons from 1980 - 1992. A 15-time All-Star, Smith collected more than 2,400 hits with 580 stolen bases over his career. In 1982, his first year with the Cardinals, he helped his team defeat the Milwaukee Brewers in the World Series. Three years later, his game-winning home run during Game 5 of the 1985 National League Championship Series earned him the NLCS MVP. Smith, like Pujols, won the Roberto Clemente Award in 1995 for his contribution to his team on the field and his community involvement off the field.
"It is an honor to represent the Cardinals organization, Major League Baseball, State Farm Insurance and the City of St. Louis to be this year's spokesman for the 2009 All-Star Game," said Albert Pujols. "It has been over 40 years since St. Louis has hosted the Midsummer Classic and I'm excited that the rest of the world will be able to see what a great city St. Louis is."
"As the All-Star Game returns to the greatest baseball town in America, St Louis, it is an honor for me to help MLB promote the All-Star FanFest," said Ozzie Smith. "I have been a participant in All-Star Week festivities as a player and most recently as a retired Legend on All-Star Sunday. All-Star Week is what baseball is all about. Come out and join in the fun!"
