The St. Louis Cardinals announced this afternoon that they have acquired right-handed pitcher Maikel Cleto from the Seattle Mariners in a trade for infielder Brendan Ryan.

Cleto (pronounced CLAY-tow), a 21-year old, 6-foot-3, 235 lb., right-handed pitcher from the Dominican Republic, spent last season at High Desert, the Mariners Advanced-A affiliate in the California League. He posted a 4-9 record with a 6.16 ERA in 23 appearances (21 starts), fanning a career-best 83 batters in 102.1 innings. Cleto continued his 2010 season pitching in the Arizona Fall League for the Peoria Javelinas, where he went 2-1 with a 7.91 ERA in six starts.

"Cleto has a power arm that at times has reached 100 (mph)," said Cardinals' Sr. Vice President/General Manager John Mozeliak. "He's someone that could project as a back of the bullpen talent with additional development and experience."

Cleto was originally signed by the New York Mets as a non-drafted free agent in 2006, but was traded to the Mariners in the three-team 12-player deal for relief pitcher J.J. Putz, almost exactly two years ago on December 11, 2008.
