Cardinals invite 66 players to camp

Colby Rasmus & Juan Gonzalez among non-roster invitees

ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals today announced that they have invited 66 players to their Major League Spring Training Camp. Cardinals' pitchers and catchers report on Thursday, Feb. 14 and begin workouts on Feb.15, as the team begins its 11th season of training in Jupiter, Fla. The Cardinals will hold their first full squad workouts on Tuesday, Feb. 19.

In addition to their 40-man Major League roster, the Cardinals have also invited 26 non-roster players to camp. That group includes Cardinals Minor League Player of the Year Colby Rasmus and two-time American League MVP Juan Gonzalez, who at age 38 is attempting a comeback after sitting out both the 2006 and 2007 seasons.

Other players with Major League service time include pitchers Ron Flores, younger brother of Randy Flores; St. Louis native Cliff Politte; former Tampa Bay Rays No. 1 draft selection Dewon Brazelton and swing-man John Wasdin. Non-roster position players with prior Major League service include infielders D'Angelo Jimenez and Josh Phelps and catcher Mark Johnson.

In addition to Rasmus, several of the Cardinals top prospects will be taking part in their first big league camp, including pitchers Mitch Boggs, Jaime Garcia, Clayton Mortensen, Adam Ottavino, Chris Perez and P.J. Walters, the team's 2007 Minor League Pitcher of the Year.

Slugging outfielders Amaury Marti and Nick Stavinoha will join catcher Bryan Anderson and third baseman David Freese, a St. Louisan, who the team acquired from San Diego this past off-season.
