Cards recall Boggs, option Garcia
Club shores up 'pen, with La Russa wary of taxing relievers

As they begin a four-game series with the Brewers on Monday, the Cards optioned Jaime Garcia to Triple-A Memphis and recalled Mitchell Boggs from Memphis. Boggs will add yet another arm to a bullpen that now has seven right-handers and two lefties.
"We used up a lot of pitches from our relievers over the [past] four games," manager Tony La Russa said. "And what you don't want to do is come in tonight or over the rest of this week and have relievers going out there when they shouldn't. You don't want to let games get away when you don't have anything you can do early, and that's the biggest reason to have Boggs here. If the starter struggles, hopefully we don't have to have anybody get punished."
For the time being, the Cards are carrying 13 pitchers -- four starters and nine relievers. One of those relievers likely will be used as a starter on Friday, but for now it's a nine-man bullpen.
Garcia had no complaints about being sent out. He turned in a respectable outing in his first big league start, allowing three runs in five innings on Sunday.
"It's not disappointing at all," he said. "I was ready for any decision they made. They need pitching in the bullpen right now, so they brought somebody up they can use right now. I'm going back down, and I'll keep working hard to try to get back up here. If they need me in 10 days, a month, I'll keep working hard and I'll be ready. That's all I can do."
