Carpenter saw a specialist on Tuesday who recommended a surgical procedure that would allow him to begin a throwing program within three months. But after meeting with another specialist on Wednesday, Carpenter will now be asking for additional input.
"They both seem to agree on what's going on," Carpenter said. "But there's a difference of opinion on the treatment of how to take care of the issue.
"So, basically, what we're going to do is get more opinions and see if there is anybody out there who has more ideas on what's going on, what the issue is and how to take care of it."
Carpenter said Cardinals team physician George Paletta will meet with the media on Friday and explain the latest developments.
"It's a frustrating process," Carpenter said. "Hopefully, we can figure out what's going on and take care of it."
Carpenter, the 2005 National League Cy Young Award winner, pitched in just four games this year. He worked 15 1/3 innings and had a 1.76 ERA.
