Cards announce Minor League staffs

Spencer takes over managing duties at Class A Palm Beach

ST. LOUIS -- A day after the information began trickling out, the Cardinals formally announced their Minor League coaching staffs on Thursday.

The staffs at Triple-A Memphis, Double-A Springfield and low Class A Quad Cities will remain the same in 2009 as they were in 2008. Chris Maloney, Ron "Pop" Warner and Steve Dillard return as the managers at those three affiliates, respectively, with their full coaching staffs intact.

The highest-level changes come at Class A Palm Beach, where Gaylen Pitts will no longer manage. Pitts will be a roving instructor in 2009. Tom Spencer takes over for Pitts, while Jeff Albert will be the new hitting coach. The remainder of the staff at Palm Beach is unchanged.

Mark DeJohn will manage short-season Batavia again, but with a new hitting coach, Ramon Ortiz, and a new pitching coach, Tim Leveque.

Rookie-level Johnson City has an entirely new staff, as do the Gulf Coast League Cardinals. Mike Shildt will manage Johnson City, flanked by pitching coach Doug White and hitting coach Johnny Rodriguez.

At the GCL level, the staff will consist of manager Steve Turco, pitching coach Dernier Orozco and hitting coach Javier Meza.
