Cards ship Gregerson to Padres
Right-hander completes Greene trade from December
By Matthew Leach / MLB.com
Gregerson, 24, spent the 2008 season at Double-A Springfield. He made 57 appearances, all in relief, posting a 3.35 ERA in 75 1/3 innings. He struck out 78 against 26 walks and allowed six home runs, collecting 10 saves for the S-Cards. He was a 28th-round selection by St. Louis in the 2006 First-Year Player Draft.
Greene, 29, is the new starting shortstop for St. Louis, which allowed Cesar Izturis to depart via free agency. He's had a fine spring in his first year in Cards camp, batting .396 with a .563 slugging percentage entering Monday's game. Greene can be a free agent after the 2009 season.
The Padres are hoping for better short-term luck with Gregerson than they had with Worrell, a submarining righty. Worrell will miss the entire 2009 season after undergoing Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery.
