Cardinals outfielder Oscar Taveras, ranked No. 1 on MLB.com's Top 100 prospect list, began a rehab assignment in the Gulf Coast League on Monday. He is on the disabled list with a high ankle sprain.
Taveras played center field for two innings on Monday and went 1-for-1 with a walk and a double in two plate appearances. He was replaced by a pinch-runner after doubling in the third inning.
Taveras has been on the disabled list since June 23, when he aggravated his ankle sprain. He originally sustained the injury on May 12 and missed three weeks. His most recent trip to the disabled list forced him to miss the Futures Game on Sunday in New York.
Taveras is hitting .306 with a .462 slugging percentage in 46 games at Triple-A Memphis this season.
