Matheny wins challenge to erase Padres' hit

After review, Goebbert called out on bang-bang play in second inning

ST. LOUIS -- A successful challenge by Cardinals manager Mike Matheny saved starter Shelby Miller from second-inning trouble Saturday.

Matheny won his sixth challenge of the season after Padres first baseman Jake Goebbert was called safe with an infield single with one out in the first inning. Goebbert hit a sharp grounder back through the middle and shortstop Jhonny Peralta threw to first base, where umpire James Hoye ruled him safe.

After a review of 1 minute, 28 seconds, the call was overturned. Instead of having runners on the corners with one out, Rymer Liriano moved to third on the play and Miller had two outs.

The Cardinals intentionally walked Alexi Amarista to face pitcher Jesse Hahn following the review. Hahn popped out to end the inning in a scoreless tie.

Matheny is now 6-for-15 this season on manager reviews.
