Though the Astros still have seven months to determine whom they'll take at No. 1, North Carolina State left-hander Carlos Rodon has established himself as the frontrunner. Owner of a mid-90s fastball and a wipeout slider, Rodon topped NCAA Division I with 184 strikeouts last spring and led the Wolfpack to their first College World Series appearance in 45 years.
12/3/2013 | Vote on Redbirds' sale delayed until Monday
The Memphis City Council, citing insufficient time to review all the necessary documents, on Tuesday delayed voting on a proposal that would lead to the Cardinals taking ownership of their Triple-A affiliate and Memphis assuming control of AutoZone Park. Council members agreed to reconvene for a special session on Monday to finish discussing the issue and take a vote.

Unwilling to pay the salary John Axford would have commanded in the arbitration process, the Cardinals non-tendered the right-handed reliever Monday. As a result, Axford becomes a free agent a little more than three months after the Cardinals acquired him in an trade with Milwaukee.

The Cardinals entered the offseason with six arbitration-eligible players. Two -- David Freese, Fernando Salas -- have since been traded. Another (Rob Johnson) was taken off the 40-man roster last month. That leaves the Cardinals with three more tender decisions, all of which must be made by Monday's 10:59 pm CT deadline. Outfielder Jon Jay and infielder Daniel Descalso are arbitration-eligible for the first time. Reliever John Axford is in his second year of arbitration eligibility.
