After a 79-minute rain delay, John Smoltz got right to work against the Cardinals in the opener, helping the Braves end their three-game losing streak. The ace stopper got all the support he needed in a two-run third and a five-run fourth inning, when nine men went up to the plate.

After dropping the series opener, the Cardinals may have wished the rain kept on coming as they were only able to crack two runs off Braves ace John Smoltz, courtesy of a two-run double by Chris Duncan in the third. Kip Wells started for the Redbirds and had a rough outing, giving up five earned runs over four innings.
