Even though we as a team are not having the type of season that we want, the type of season we should be having, I'm thrilled to be part of the All-Star team, even though the last month for me hasn't been that smooth. Still, I have scrapped, I have worked hard to keep my head above water, and this is my reward. I'm ecstatic.

We were in San Diego to play the Padres, and I got the call early in the morning. The voice on the other line informed me I had been selected. I was a little sleepy at the time but that got me up and going really quick. I was very happy to awake to that type of news.

The first thing I did was call my mom and dad. There was no doubt in my mind they would be the first people I would call. They congratulated me, and after the game on Sunday I looked forward to flying home and seeing them to share this.

One thing I'm really looking forward to doing in Anaheim is meeting up with Carl Crawford. Like me, Carl is from Houston. We played on the same Little League team. To go from that to being All-Stars together can't happen too often.

Something else that makes this special is that Charlie Manuel selected me. We go back together to Class A ball in the Phillies organization. He's been someone I could always talk hitting with, and of course, he's gone on to have success with the Phillies, too.

It will probably be a whirlwind of an experience. I have no clue what it will be like, but I know I am going to try and just enjoy myself. I'm going to take in the Home Run Derby; I'm going to take in all the festivities. It's my first time going, so I just want to enjoy it.

I look forward to sharing the experience with my parents, too. About the only thing that would make it better was if the game was in Houston, but now that I've been selected, I want to play and I want to play an important role.

I guess you first start think about the possibility once you do get to the big leagues. You wonder inside if you will get the chance to play with the best players in the game. You take things one day at a time, but it's still in the back of your mind. So you just continue to work, you just continue not to put too much pressure on yourself. If you believe you can do it, then you might be able to do it.

In the big picture, I am excited, and I just want to keep getting better.

Michael Bourn will be a reserve for the National League All-Star team. The Astros' leadoff hitter is batting .262 with 51 runs scored, 17 doubles and 28 stolen bases. He also leads the NL with eight outfield assists.
