Tony Clark statement on the passing of Mr. Toru Matsubara

Major League Baseball Players Association executive director Tony Clark issued this evening the following statement upon learning of the passing of Mr. Toru Matsubara. Mr. Matsubara, the secretary general of the Japanese Professional Baseball Players Association, passed away Sunday, at age 58, of cancer.

"We were terribly saddened to learn of Mr. Matsubara's passing, and, on behalf of the Major League Baseball Players Association and all its members, I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family of our dear friend and colleague. Against tremendous odds, Mr. Matsubara worked tirelessly to ensure that Japanese Professional Baseball Players were treated fairly by those who govern the sport. And he played an instrumental role in helping make the World Baseball Classic the sport's premier international tournament. His passion and commitment for the sport and those who play it will be missed terribly. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Matsubara's family, friends and colleagues."
