NEW YORK -- Yahoo! Sports and the Major League Baseball Players Trust today begin a series of Internet specials highlighting outstanding performances of Major League baseball players during the 2007 season, both on and off the field. The innovative programming features five "webisodes" [see webcast schedule below] honoring the winners of 2007 Players Choice Awards, the only awards where the players themselves select the "best of the best." The Players Trust makes grants totalling $260,000 annually to charities recommended by the Players Choice Award winners.
Hosted by Hall of Famer and Yahoo! Baseball Expert Tony Gwynn and Yahoo! Sports personality Larry Beil, the Yahoo! Sports original programming will feature exclusive interviews with each Players Choice Award winner. The top pitchers, rookies and comeback players in each league will reflect on their season and the causes most important to them. The final will announce the Player of the Year, as chosen by his peers, and the Marvin Miller Man of the Year--the player whose performance both on the field and off most inspires other players to higher levels of achievement.
Since 1992, the Players Trust has contributed more than $3 million dollars to charities around the world in honor of Players Choice Award winners. In partnership with Volunteers of America, the Players Trust trains and inspires the next generation of community volunteers through the Action Team, a national youth volunteer initiative.
